ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Abstract:
»In the large corpus of Holocaust artworks there are presentations of women’s experiences of humiliation, abuse, and sexual violence during the Holocaust. The artists who created them are Holocaust survivors, artists born during the Holocaust years outside of Europe, second and third generation descendants of Holocaust survivors, and others.
Works of art created during and right after the Holocaust by Holocaust victims are an authentic documentary expression of the events of that era. Other artworks by non-survivor artists commemorate and reflect upon this violence and serve to inform viewers about a relatively unfamiliar part of history.
Due to the limited time, I will address only two subjects concerning violence against Jewish Women during the Holocaust in Visual Arts. The first one will be the negation of femininity and identity by shaving women's hair as depicted by Zofia Rozensztrauch and by dressing them with the striped prisoner uniform as shown in Halina Olomucki's drawing. The second subject will be depicting sexual violence against Jewish women during the Holocaust. It includes a continuum of sexual abuse such as physical-sexual humiliation, sexual slavery, sex as a means of survival, and rape as Appears in Muriel (Nezhnie) Helfman, Zeev Porath (Wilhelm Ochs), or Racheli Yosef.«
